Spyware infestation has been, and continues to be, a huge problem. Most spyware infects the users computer without their knowledge. Browsing habits, firewalls and up-to-date antivirus and spyware software are key factors in maintaining a glut-free, secure computer.

It is rare to have a PC in our workshop that does not contain some form of spyware. Quite often it is simple for home users to remove spyware via an application such as Ad-Aware, however some spyware does embed itself within the Registry, or is not detected or totally removed by these applications. As with Antivirus programs, they cannot be relied on 100%.

Whilst a lot of spyware is harmless and may be doing not much more than accumulating statistical information, it will still be using the Internet connection to relay the information. Some do have more sinister tendencies such as logging keystrokes, ‘hogging' bandwidth, hijacking homepages, and adjusting TCP/IP settings possibly creating Internet connectivity and routing problems. Many times dial-up connections have been rendered useless after removing the spyware. Dial-up connections opening after rebooting your PC or just popping up at random? This is a good indication of spyware presence.

We cannot stress the importance of maintaining a Firewall, as well as up-to-date antivirus protection. Programs downloaded and installed for the purpose of file sharing also leave your PC open to hackers intruders.
